Setting a new Wi-Fi password

It takes a few minutes, and every device on your network is better protected.

  • Open your router settings

Type the address printed on the router, often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, into a browser, or use your provider’s app.

  • Choose WPA3 or WPA2

Pick WPA3 if your router offers it, otherwise WPA2. Never WEP or an open network.

  • Paste the new key

Use 20 characters or more. Each device asks for it once and then remembers it.

Questions

How long should a Wi-Fi password be?

WPA2 and WPA3 accept 8 to 63 characters. Use at least 20 random characters: you type it once per device, so length costs almost nothing.

Why are symbols off by default?

Some TVs, printers and game consoles make symbols hard to type. With letters and numbers alone, 20 characters already give more than 110 bits of entropy.

Should guests use the same Wi-Fi?

Better not. Most routers can create a guest network with its own password, so visitors never reach your computers and smart devices.

Is it safe to generate a Wi-Fi password online?

Here, yes. The password is made by your browser and never sent anywhere. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
